DataGrid exceptions on re-size the column width...

We are using Aug 16, 2013 nightly 5.0 builds. When we re-size the column width the following exception happens:

System.InvalidOperationException: This Visual is not connected to a PresentationSource. at System.Windows.Media.Visual.PointFromScreen(Point point) at #lu.#9C.#AY(Visual relativeTo) at Mindscape.WpfElements.WpfDataGrid.DataGridColumnHeader.#C2() at System.Windows.Threading.ExceptionWrapper.InternalRealCall(Delegate callback, Object args, Int32 numArgs) at MS.Internal.Threading.ExceptionFilterHelper.TryCatchWhen(Object source, Delegate method, Object args, Int32 numArgs, Delegate catchHandler)

Here is the process:

1) We are using code to add column on OnItemsSourceChanged() functions

2) the DataGrid is bound to the DataTable.DefaultView

3) If the number of columns in the DataTable is not changed, we will not re-initialized the columns in the DataGrid.(I also tried to setup columns again, but same exceptions happenned)

4) When this DataTable.Defaultview is changed and you try to re-size the column at the same time by dragging the column divide line, the above crashes happens.

Please see if you can fix the problem.

I downloaded Aug 21 2013 version 5.0 nightly build and still have the same problem.

So I am looking for alternate solution, set the column width with auto so that the user does not have to re-size the column, there are 2 problems:

1) When the data updated, some of the column dividing lines is missing until you use the horizontal scroll bar This is happening when I apply the filter to the DataTable.DefaultView see image attached.

2) At some point when you use horizontal scroll bar, it will have exceptions:(not happen very often, when it is happening, there is empty column at the right-most side and scroll bar is to the right-most position)

Your scenario may be slightly different than what I reproduced. This time I have gone right to the source of the exception and added a check to prevent the crash from happening. This will be available in the next nightly build.

The only way I've been able to reproduce this issue with the nightly build that you now have is to completely refresh the column list (which you briefly mentioned) while the user is dragging the column. If this is the case, then this new fix may prevent columns to be resized while the DataView is being loaded back to the DataGrid. The reason for this is that if the user presses the mouse on a column resizer, and then the columns are refreshed, then a new column header + column resizer thumb will be created and displayed for each column. But now that mouse is attached to a column resizer that no longer exists. Maybe there is a way for us to change the way the column headers are recycled in the virtualization, but this could easily break something, so I'll leave this for now. If there is a problem with resizing columns in this scenario in the next nightly build, you can avoid this by recycling the DataGridColumn objects at your end. i.e, rather than clearing the column list and starting again with new DataGridColumn instances, reuse the DataGridColumns that will remain the same.

I did recycle the column object when there is no column changes when I tried aug 21 nightly build.

Here is scenery you can test: 1) Let a main thread timer to do the DataView update

2) Click on the column header line divider, to keep resizing (all the time )

The column resizing crash will be fixed in the next nightly build. But this may prevent the resizing from working in the case that the columns list is being updated while the user is dragging. I tried your scenario and it is working fine at my end, should be fixed at your end too in the next nightly build. I'll also look into fixing the auto size issues just in case you need to take this approach.

I've resolved the missing column lines as best I can. While scrolling vertically, the size of a column might jitter slightly, though it's not too bad, and I best not make any major changes to fix this.

I was unable to reproduce the index out of bounds exception, it seems very rare. I have removed these exceptions and applied bound constraints instead which is working fine at my end.

These will be available in the next nightly build.

I have made a DataGrid that uses a BindingList and continuously adds new items but have not been able to reproduce this problem. I've looked through all the code changes that have occurred since Aug 16 (which is only a few changes) but none of those code changes effect the measurement algorithm of DataGridPanel. I've looked through the MeasureOverride method and can not find where this exception could occur. Please provide any more information you can about how to reproduce this problem. I'll continue investigating at our end.

I made a testing project, even though I can not reproduce the problem on Insert a new record but with different steps, I can partially get the exceptions:

1) Run the application

2) Click on More Problem button

3) on the bottom part, switch between 2 tabs (click on 2nd tab and then click on User-Defined Time Series Settings)

4) click Insert button a few times,

5) click on "x" on bottom (see the image, with red circle)

6) crashes will happen:

This repro project was a huge help. I resolved the bug that this project reproduces which was caused by a precision issue originating from the docking framework you are using. Fixing this bug gave me the idea of where the original exception in the MeasureOverride method occurs. Although I could not directly reproduce the original exception, I am certain I have resolved this issue too. These fixes will be available in the next nightly build.

The original exception and problem is fixed.

BUT there are TWO new problem we found with Aug. 23 Nightly Build:

1) Columns order will be changed, I did not have reproducing projects for it, but here is the steps:

a)You set up the data columns as in the SetupColumn() function as in CmostPlusDataGrid in LargeDataTable.zip assume we have 3 columns in this DataGrid.Columns collection

b) after that we dynamically create another column and use DataGrid.Columns.Insert(1, newColumn) the first time the new column will be in 2nd column of the dataGrid.

c) after ItemsSource changed, it will repeat steps 1)a)-1)b), then the newColumn will be at the last column, move from 2nd to the last.

This is not there on Aug. 16, nightly build.

2) The 2nd problem is more serious and we cannot live with it and I have reproducing project by modifying LargeDataTable.zip a bit. The Data disappeared from DataGrid display. Here are the steps:

a) Run the application

b) Click on MoreProblem button

c) Click on Insert button, 1 non-empty record appears, Age=20

d) click on Switch button, empty records

e) click on Insert button, 1 non-empty record appears, Age=21, you can click on switch button to see these 2 records belongs to 2 different BindingLists.

f) click on 2nd Tab, and click on Switch button

g) click on the User-Defined Time Series Settings, now you will see an empty record on the data grid. If you click on a cell, you can see the value is there, but just....

I am really worried about the stability on the products as the released date approaching and I need to spend so much time to test and re-producing the problem.

Please ask your QA do a thorough test on the products.

Thanks for the repro project and explanations. I have reverted the build back as close to the 16th as possible which will resolve these new issues, but still include the fixes for the crashes. The problem point was internal column model recycling that I had added to resolve the column issues you had. I have removed this which may prevent columns from being resized while rapidly changing the ItemsSource property as I had mentioned before. But as you are using auto sizing and disabling column resizing, this shouldn't be an issue, and it will no longer crash at least.

I and our QA did the test and seemed it is fixed.

Crashes only happens once when the Window is in very small size, see image. As I restricted the window smallest size to 100 the crashes went away.

Great to hear the issue has been resolved. I have not been able to reproduce the shrinking crash but I have noted down the stack trace to look into later. Good that you have a solution for this too.
