Hello, can someone tell me if I can use LightSpeed modeller in VS 2010? Thanks |
Hi Webio, Currently you cannot but we're looking into it. We wanted to wait until VS beta 2 had been released as beta 1 wasn't as fully baked. Ivan may have more to add to this but I'd suggest just keeping an eye on the blog as we'll certainly announce when VS 2010 designer support is available. I hope that helps, John-Daniel Trask |
ok thanks :) |
Any timeframe on this? I want to move to VS 2010 but I am waiting on Lightspeed. It's not a big problem, but knowing a timeframe would let me schedule things. |
This is something we'll look at post-3.0, probably sometime in December. But I can't promise a definite date. |
any updates on this? |
Now that LightSpeed 3 is released we will be looking to get out a standalone side by side install of the designer for VS2010 while it is still in beta. We will be looking at doing this after we get back from the break now. Allegedly there will be a public RC build of 2010 being put out in the new year by Microsoft so depending on when this happens we may wait to target the RC build since there have been changes in the DSL SDK since Beta 2 - so it would be useful not to have to support multiple beta builds :) Once VS2010 is finally released (April 2010 at last update) we will of course look to have this integrated back into the normal installer.

Hello, any luck with VS2010 designer? |
Hi Webio, We are currently waiting for the Feb RC build to be made available so we can target that since there have been changes to the DSL SDK since Beta 2. We will be aiming to make a standalone installer available for LS3 during the RC period and then look to integrate this back into the main installer once VS2010 is actually released proper.

Hi guys, Due to quite a bit continued interest in this, we have put up a build of the VS2010 designer as a standalone installer into the store for LightSpeed 3 customers to have a play with. We have only tested this internally so be wary before installing :) It will show up under your LightSpeed 3 subscription as "ALPHA LightSpeed Designer for VS 2010 (Please report any issues)". It should install happily on Beta 2 or later; we have tested this on a number of machines/versions internally and havnt noted any specific issues. As it is a side by side install this should not impact your VS2008 installation of the LightSpeed 3 designer. We will look at releasing updated builds once the public RC of VS2010 is available and we have a more consistent version to target.
In the meantime we are keen to hear any feedback you have. The experience should be identical to the VS2008 designer as we have made no changes over the existing codebase other than as required to target 2010. As such you should expect to be able to import any existing models without issue.

It looks like it is working :) I'll let you know when something wrong will happen. |

Jeremy, Can we please get the updated build for RC as soon as possible please. |

Hi, I'm about to test this ORM, but before I do I'd like to confirm there will be support for PLINQ when the VS2010 release hits? In one of the demo vid's it talked about targeting SQL, Oracle & MySQL. I'm about to test but does this include support for SQL Azure? Cheers, Jeremy |
Hi Jeremy, LightSpeed does support SQL Azure: http://www.mindscape.co.nz/blog/index.php/2010/01/13/the-dynamic-duo-lightspeed-azure/ Could you elaborate on the PLINQ support? I'm not 100% sure how parallel LINQ would aid querying a database but perhaps you have some more information on this :-) I hope that helps, John-Daniel Trask |
Datacomrelate, We'll put out an updated build for the RC early next week for everyone. Kind regards, John-Daniel Trask |
Hi JD,
I'm a bit more familar with the object model now. Naturally PLINQ doesn't apply to linq-toSQL rather linq-to-objects, I wasn't sure before I tried your ORM so sorry about that.. The only extra info I have on this is that ms is stearing more toward EF than linq-to-sql and as you guys are probably aware the changes in linq-to-sql in .Net 4.0 (http://damieng.com/blog/2009/06/01/linq-to-sql-changes-in-net-40) aren't nearly as impressive as the work put into the EF. Mind you a lot of the EF stuff looks like a bit of rip from what you guys have done. Keep up the good work, grab a couple of patents, cant wait to try the VS2010 edition:) Cheers, Jeremy

Hi Everyone, I have just published a blog post about the designer for VS 2010 RC. You can read about it here or just go to your account page and download it. As always, please let us know if you find any issues :-) Kind regards, John-Daniel Trask |

Hi, i want to try lightspeed on vs 2010 but i'm a "new customer" and don't have the link to download on "my account". Any plans to have a public trial that works with vs 2010 ? |
up ! anyone ?! |
At this stage the VS2010 RC designer is only available as a separate installer for customers. We dont currently have any plans on making this available for the Express release until we have updated the LightSpeed installer generally to conditionally install VS2008/2010 designers depending on what is installed on the system. We will certainly make some noise once that has happened :)

Hello, I'm attempting to evaluate LightSpeed in VS2010. John-Daniel sent me a link to get the download as we haven't previously purchased LightSpeed for VS2008. The install seemed to go fine. However, when I try to add a LightSpeed model to a sample console applicaton in VS2010 I get an error. I used the /log option when starting VS2010 and found an error entry in the activity log. The following is the description and error info. <description>CreateInstance failed for package [Mindscape.LightSpeed.Generator.Integration.LightSpeedModelPackage, Mindscape.LightSpeed.Generator.Integration.DslPackage.10, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=dabefdafd5f32554]</description><errorinfo>Could not load file or assembly 'Mindscape.LightSpeed.Generator.Integration.Dsl.Mapping, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=dabefdafd5f32554' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.</errorinfo>
I did a listing of the GAC and the LightSpeed assembly shows up in there: Any ideas on what might be happening? Thanks, Dave M. |
Hi Dave, Can you check which other Mindscape.LightSpeed.* assemblies are registered in the GAC? The 2010 installer assumes you already have LightSpeed 3 installed which will GAC register the core designer assemblies which the 2010 designer shares.
Jeremy |
Jeremy, No other Mindscape assemblies are registered since I didn't have LightSpeed3 previously installed. Our shop is switching over to .NET and so we are starting with VS2010 since it's close to being released. Therefore, buying LightSpeed3 for VS2008 wouldn't do me any good. I uninstalled the VS2010 install, downloaded and installed LightSpeed Express, and re-installed the VS2010 Designer. However that still doesn't work. The listing of the GAC shows the following as far as possible MindScape assemblies. Are the msXXX assemblies also from MindScape? Mindscape.LightSpeed.Generator.Integration.Dsl.10, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=dabefdafd5f32554, processorArchitecture=MSIL msddslmp, Version=10.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a, processorArchitecture=MSIL msddsp, Version=10.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a, processorArchitecture=MSIL The activity log shows the following error:
CreateInstance failed for package [Mindscape.LightSpeed.Generator.Integration.LightSpeedModelPackage, Mindscape.LightSpeed.Generator.Integration.DslPackage.10, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=dabefdafd5f32554]
I thought loading LightSpeed Express first would get me the additional assemblies, but I guess not???

Hello Dave, You're right, LightSpeed Express does include the additional assemblies you need... but it only installs them if it finds VS2008 on the machine. Since you're going straight to 2010, I guess you don't have VS2008. I'll take a look at the Express installer and see if I can get it to offer the 2008 designer install even if it only finds 2010 on the machine -- that will get you the components you need. (Needless to say, this issue will go away when VS2010 RTMs and we merge the VS2010 install into the main install.) |
Jeremy, I am evaluating the 2010 Designer. However I have tried to install my licensed LightSpeed Prof. on a Windows 7 64bit and do not see the assembly in the GAC? Will this work?
Thanks Kevin |
Hello Dave, We have now updated the LightSpeed Express nightly build so that it will offer to install the designer support assemblies if VS2010 is present. You can get the Express nightly from http://www.mindscape.co.nz/products/lightspeed/nightlybuilds.aspx. Please note you will still need to install the VS2010 integration package: this is not yet integrated into the Express nightly. In addition, some features may not work in VS2010 because the VS2010 integration package was built against an earlier version of the DLLs. (We know, in particular, that the migrations UI does not work in VS2010.) We will try to push out an updated build of the VS2010 package soon; in the meantime, this should enable you to evaluate at least the core model design and import features.

Thanks Ivan. I have one more question. If we decide to go with LightSpeed, we are going to need to start using it right away in VS2010. However, the trial software limits the number of entities a model may contain. Assuming the new version of LightSpeed for VS2010 was not out yet, if we purchased LightSpeed3 and used the VS2010 integration package, would that remove the limit on the number of entities our models could contain?
Yes, it would. The limits are part of LightSpeed Express, not part of the VS2010 integration package. |
Hi, I was wondering if there is an express edition available for lightspeed with support for visual studio 2010. Thanks |
Hi, It does but you need to get the latest nightly build: http://www.mindscape.co.nz/products/lightspeed/nightlybuilds.aspx LightSpeed 3.1's release shortly will update the standard Express download to include support. I hope that helps, John-Daniel Trask |
