The DataGrid is throwing all these errors using Alloy. I think this is slowing up the rendering significantly.

Hello Nestor

Yes this is slowing down the rendering whenever you select a row in the top DataGrid. This is being caused by the custom cell code you would have copied from Alloy.xaml. I've tried many things to get rid of these messages, but nothing seems to work. The ancestor bindings that are failing can be seen in the triggers of the cell templates and styles. I have only been able to reproduce this in your previous repro app when I include the custom cell style. If I remove the cell style, then the messages stop. But if remove the triggers, the messages still get printed - almost as though the default style is still affecting the cells somehow. Setting OverridesDefaultStyle to true unusually does not work either.

The only way I've found to avoid the messages is to not apply a custom cell style - though this obviously is not an ideal solution. I've noted this down as something to continue exploring later.

I may be able to re-jig the properties on the cell-container to work around the AncestorType bindings, but we won't be able to do this just yet. Hello Nestor

I took the code from your xaml file and pasted it into the ResourceDictionary within App.xaml of your previous repro project. I am no longer seeing the messages compared to when the xaml is in a separate ResourceDictionary file. Please try moving the resources from your MindscapeResources file into the App.xaml file of your application and let me know if this solves the message issue at your end also.

Hello Nestor

In this case I'd recommend only putting the DataGridCellContainer related resources in App.xaml, and other resources can stay in your MindscapeResources file. As long as there isn't a resource that is causing both bugs, this will work. Let me know how it goes. Other than that, I'm out of ideas for this. The Ancestor binding issue seems to be a known bug in the .NET framework making it difficult to work around.

I'm stuck. I don't know how to solve this problem.

Even if I don't customize any style I get the error when I include

<ResourceDictionary.MergedDictionaries>
    <ms:Alloy />
</ResourceDictionary.MergedDictionaries>

in each window as opposed to in app.xaml. However, if I put it in App.xaml i get the other error regarding multiple dispatchers. I guess another way to solve this would be to solve the multiple dispatcher problem so that I can put only in App.xaml. But I haven't been able to replicate the multiple dispatcher problem in a simple project.

This is an elusive one...

Hello Nestor

I have resolved the ancestor-type binding issue which will be fixed in the next nightly build. This will mean you can avoid adding Alloy to App.xaml, and only add it to either the windows, or your MindscapeResources dictionary.

Important: The styling behavior has been very slightly modified to fix this bug, so to get you custom row and cell styles to apply correctly, you will need to add a Setter to set OverridesDefaultStyle to True on your custom DataGridRow style.

If I do this in each window (with nothing in App.xaml) your fix works:

<ResourceDictionary.MergedDictionaries>
      <ms:Alloy />
      <ResourceDictionary Source="MindscapeCustom.xaml" />
</ResourceDictionary.MergedDictionaries>

But if I do this

<ResourceDictionary.MergedDictionaries>
      <ResourceDictionary Source="MindscapeCustom.xaml" />
</ResourceDictionary.MergedDictionaries>

and do the <ms:Alloy /> inside MindscapeCustom.xaml the fix doesnt work. I don't understand why... but I'll leave the first form in. Thanks, Nestor

Jason 2,661 posts	It should have something to do with the order that templates get applied and bindings get resolved in these different scenarios.
